REFLECTIONS  -  Poems from the North East of Scotland

Mr Sutherland is a well known preacher and singer from the North East of Scotland.  He spent most of his life as a fisherman following in his father’s footsteps. He is now retired.
We pray that his poems will be a blessing to you.

SEE  HIM

See the gates swing open wide

Welcoming the warrior home

Advancing like the swelling tide

Across the raging surging foam

See him enter now the city

The New Jerusalem above

Home for all eternity

Because of God’s unfailing love.

See him in bright robes arrayed

Occupy his allotted place

He who battled on and prayed

Supplicated at the throne of grace

Often found upon his knees

In the morning and at night

Brought to God his earnest pleas

Never once gave up the fight

See him by the Saviour crowned

Bending low down at his feet

Prostrate lying on the ground

His adoration there repeat

See him rise and take his crown

Cast it down, his Lord acclaim

Hear the anthem all else drown

In the Praise of  Jesus’ name

WG. Sutherland. 14/1/07.

BETHEL

To Bethel I return

The altar there, repair

No longer Lord to spurn

Your proffered hand of care

Be it famine or in fullness

In plenitude or dearth

Your promise is to bless

While I remain on Earth.

Here, to call upon your name

Before my head I rest

Find a pardon for my shame

A peace within my breast

Oh God of revelation

May I that ladder see

The pathway to salvation

Found only Lord in thee.

A pillar here to raise

My gratitude to show

My voice lift up in praise

As my cup does overflow

Here, I would my vows renew

To follow and obey

Ever seek your will to do

All along my pilgrim way.

W.G. Sutherland. 9/6/07.

LIGHT OF THE WORLD

Light of the world, is he

Shining forth in splendour

Through the years of history

As our Lord and Saviour

Penetrating the darkest night

Surrounding souls astray

Like a morning star so bright

That heralds the coming day.

A beacon that shines eternally

Across the sea of time

In a radiance perpetually

To every land and clime

Dispelling gloom and fear

From hearts filled with shame

Drying the falling tear

Through the power of his name.

More resplendent than any other

In fullness and energy

Nothing, its flame can smother

Nor outshine its potency

Touching lives in despair

With its beams of radiant love

Transmitting God’s divine care

From the courts of heaven above.

W.G. Sutherland 20/3/07.
